California Medicare Supplement

Making the decision to purchase a California Medicare supplement will be one of the wisest you make as you enter this transition from traditional health insurance to Medicare.  The questions we are constantly getting are, “Why should I spend this extra money on one of the California medigap plans? “  and “What options do I have when it comes to a California Medicare supplement?” At we are ready to answer these and any other questions you may have so that you can feel comfortable with whatever decisions you make with your Medicare needs.

The Need for California Medigap Plans

Medigap is just another name for one of the California Medicare supplement plans.  As you research your options you will constantly hear them used interchangeably.   The first trick is to understand why you need one.  To understand the need you have to get a grasp of Medicare and what it does, and does not, cover.

Medicare was originally designed as hospital insurance.  For this reason it will cover a large portion of any hospital visit or skilled nursing care.  This is called Medicare Part A.  For most people Part A does not cost you anything per month but you are responsible for a deductible and for portions of the costs that exceed 60 days in the hospital.

Medicare Part B was later introduced to help seniors with the ongoing cost of going to doctors’ offices and outpatient services.  Since these costs are ongoing and, if you have chronic conditions, can be very costly this was a great addition to the health insurance options that seniors have.  Part B has its own premiums (monthly expense) as well as a small annual deductible and a copayment of 20% of the Medicare approved cost for any outpatient service.  This is very comparable to many of the regular health insurance plans you may see from a private plan.

As you can see there is a potential for some pretty large costs for anyone who is going on Medicare.  These liabilities are also referred to as gaps in coverage.  To fill these gaps the federal government worked together with private insurers to create California Medigap Plans.  These plans are very affordable and can fill some or all of the gaps left by Medicare.

California Medicare Supplement Options

There are actually ten different California medigap plans.  Each one will fill a different number of the gaps in your Medicare coverage.  Having helped thousands of people with this decision we have experience with each of these plans.  There are merits to all the plans but by a wide margin we put most people on either Plan F or Plan G.

Plan F is the simplest because it fills all the gaps.  You do not have to pay extra for inpatient or outpatient procedures.  For this reason it is the most expensive of the California medigap plans.

Plan G is very similar to plan F except that it does not cover the annual deductible for Medicare Part B.  While you will have to pay the $140 deductible you may be able to get a rate that is $20 cheaper per month or more.  This means you could pay out $140 in a year to save $240.
